Sterile Field Visualizer – HoloLens 2 App

Objective:

Create an augmented reality experience that allows students to observe where specific staff roles and the sterile field are positioned within an operating room in a manner superior to typical textbook diagrams.

App has been deployed since 2023 and over one hundred students have utilized it at the GVSU Simulation Center.

Current Features:

• Accurate 3D model of an operating room and the sterile field created in collaboration with subject matter experts at Corewell Health and Grand Valley State University
• Model is placed automatically in room by gazing at a QR code with the Microsoft HoloLens 2
• The sterile field glows and pulses green in an animated way to make itself obvious
• Staff titles turn to face user as they walk the room
