“Seaplane Pacifist” – a Porco Rosso fangame

currently developing in Unity and modeling in Blender

Objective:

Pay homage to the Ghibli classic “Porco Rosso” by creating a game mechanic that allowed the player to make precise, non-lethal shots and incapacitate their opponent in the same way Porco does

Current Features:

  • A menu screen with programmatic ambient animation (Porco snores, the radio lights flicker, the plane bobs, the clouds move, etc)
    • Camera and telephone ringing animation also plays on start press!
    • Similar technical animation is used to make the seaplane Porco flies come to life, the models for engines and pipes bounce in scale while sputtering smoke
  • Two original 3D models of iconic seaplanes from Porco Rosso and a painterly style similar to the original film
  • A unique mechanic for selecting very specific shot locations while flying, inspired by Porco’s non-lethal dogfighting in the film and the dead eye mechanic of Red Dead Redemption
